The functional core

Compare floors by the room they are going in

How to read the comparison

The bars are a quick read on the trade-offs that actually matter once a floor is installed. Waterproofing decides whether a material can even go in a wet room. Scratch resistance and comfort underfoot shape day-to-day living. Resale value matters most if you are selling soon, and DIY friendliness is only relevant if you are considering doing it yourself, which we would gently talk you out of on tile.

No single floor wins every category, which is the whole point. Hardwood leads on resale and warmth but cannot go where water lives. Luxury vinyl is the forgiving all-rounder for busy households. Tile is nearly indestructible and fully waterproof but hard and cold. Carpet is the warmest and quietest, and belongs in bedrooms and on stairs rather than kitchens. The right answer is usually a mix, room by room.

Room-by-room, at a glance

  • Kitchen: Spills and dropped pans are constant, so waterproof wins. LVP is warmer underfoot; tile is the most bulletproof.
  • Bathroom: Standing water rules out hardwood and carpet. Tile with a bonded membrane is the gold standard.
  • Living Room: This is hardwood's room if the household allows it. LVP is the waterproof, pet-proof stand-in.
  • Bedroom: Warmth and quiet matter most here. Carpet is cozy; hardwood with a rug reads more upscale.
  • Basement: Below-grade moisture rules out solid hardwood. Waterproof LVP is the safe pick.
  • Entry & Mudroom: Grit and wet boots demand a hard, waterproof surface that cleans up fast.
