The challenge
The existing slab in this Bearden kitchen was noticeably uneven, and large-format tile is unforgiving of a substrate that is not dead flat: lippage and cracked grout are the guaranteed result of setting big tile on a bad floor. The homeowners also wanted radiant warmth underfoot to take the chill off the hard surface.
Our solution
We poured a self-leveling underlayment to bring the slab within tolerance, embedded a radiant-heat mat, then set 24-by-24 Italian porcelain in a slate look with a stain-resistant, color-matched grout. Every cut was planned to land at the room's edges, out of the main sight lines.
The result
A perfectly flat, radiant-warm, highly durable surface ready for whatever a real kitchen produces. The floor cleans up in seconds and shrugs off the cast iron that would have chipped a lesser surface.
